Coffee is a popular drink that has a lot of health benefits

  • Coffee is full of potent antioxidants
  • Coffee is good for your liver health
  • Coffee increases the workout performance
  • Coffee boosts your brain function

But be careful of its side effects

  • Coffee can cause insomnia
  • It has laxative properties
  • Coffee relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter causing heartburn.
  • Caffeine has a dehydrating effect if you drink too much.

How much is too much?

Up to 400 mg of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee.

You should consider the caffeine content of other food and drinks, as

  • Most tea (black or green) has 15-70 mg caffeine / cup.
  • Instant coffee (a 240 ml cup): often around 65 to 90 mg
  • The caffeine level in Colas is about 35 mg for 240 ml.
  • Chocolate naturally contains a small amount of caffeine:
    • Dark chocolate (30 gm): 20 mg caffeine
    • Milk chocolate (30 gm): 6 mg caffeine.
